Tout commence un beau jour...
Où la mère de Robbie, ma belle mère en l'occurence... trouve cette annonce postée par Nigel Martin - Smith dans le journal local. Robbie voulait devenir acteur... mais il faut bien commencer par quelque chose, et dieu merci, ce fut la chanson!
C'est accompagné par sa maman, Robbie n'a alors que 16 ans, qu'il se rend à l'audition. Il chante une chanson de Jason Donovan et est engagé... Les Take That sont donc 5!

Mais comme toutes les belles histoires ont une fin, ce natif de Stoke-on-Trent sent le vent tourner en 1995 et décide de poursuivre sa carrière en solo, abandonnant Mark Owen et ses potes, après six ans de vie commune.

Voilà la chanson qui m'a fait découvrir Rob, eh oui je dois l'avouer, et j'en suis désolée, avant je pensais qu'il était juste un chanteur qui allait passer, grace àcette chanson je me suis rendue compte a quel point c'est un artiste hors-pair, superbe, charismatique et j'en passe...

Bref, Robbie se lance tout seul, à l'assaut de l'univers impitoyable du show-biz dès 1995. Enfin, pas vraiment tout seul, car pour assurer ses arrières, il rejoint en tournée le groupe Oasis des frères Gallagher. Au programme: des chansons pop, de la déconnade et de la bière.

Libéré de toutes contraintes vis-à-vis de ses anciens partenaires, il trouve heureusement le temps de composer l'une ou l'autre chanson. Freedom, par exemple, une reprise d'un morceau pop de George Michael, travaillée à la sauce Robbie et signée sous son nouveau label Chrysalis. Résultat: un splendide bide qui ne l'empêche toutefois pas de faire la une de la presse, mais pas vraiment pour ses talents musicaux: à force de faire la teuf, l'énergique Robbie accumule les kilos superflus et fait le désespoir de ses groupies.

Life Thru a Lens

Après quelques cures de désintoxication (alcool et drogue), la star nous revient en 1997 avec un second single: Old Before I Die.

Life Thru a Lens, son premier album, sort la même année. Il marche sur les plates-bandes d'Oasis et de Blur. L'accueil est plus chaleureux, surtout en Grande-Bretagne où le titre Angels est plébiscité.

Suit en 1998 I've Been Expecting You, auquel Neil Trennant (Pet Shop Boys) et Neil Hannon (Divine Comedy) collaborent. On y retrouve le titre kitsch Millenium, reprise du thème du James Bond "You Only Live Twice" de John Barry et Leslie Bricusse.

C'est une année faste pour Rob: il décroche 3 trophées lors des "Brits Awards": le meilleur clip vidéo (Millenium), le meilleur artiste masculin et le meilleur single (Angels).
